Championship Week 40: The top eight divide

What fun round 40 was - with two games pitting top eight contenders against each other.A four point gap has now opened out between the top four and the next four.
It's probably fair to say that we're now looking at a case of two from the top four for automatic promotion (and someone, somewhere, somehow winning the title too) with another two from the remaining four teams to take the bottom two playoff spots alongside those who miss out on automatic promotion.
In fact, this post from Colin Trainor @colinttrainor highlights that point very nicely.

I made a lot of Eddie Howe's acquisition of Kenwyne Jones in my last post, wondering how he would fit in. The one scenario I failed to mention was set pieces.
Jones has been very dangerous for Cardiff from deadball situations this season, thanks in no small part to Peter Whittingham's wonderful left foot.
This may become a critical use for Bournemouth too.
Thus, with Ipswich leading 1-0 late in the second half on came Jones. Bournemouth shortly after won a corner, Jones beat his man to the near post area of the six yard box and with his first touch nodded in a powerful equaliser.

It's probably worth noting that Bournemouth did some serious damage to Ipswich's shot share (Corsi/TSR) and shots on target share with that game - much as they did to Middlesbrough the week before.
The circumstances were different (Ipswich's early goal meaning they could afford to sit back more and limit their attacking ambitions) but still Bournemouth are showing that they can boss matches against the top teams in the league - a good sign should they find themselves in the Premier League or the playoffs, come the evening of May 2.

In contrast, the other match-up between Derby and Watford turned in to a wild one.
Watford suffered their seventh sending-off (and conceded an equaliser from the suubsequent penalty) of the season, but I almost wonder if this really a bother to them. They've won so many points from being a man down it really is amazing.
I've mentioned this earlier in the season, but the obvious effects of being a man down so often have also hit Watford's shot metrics - the second half on Friday being a case in point.

However, Derby's woeful, wasteful shooting meant that despite dominating the shot share, it was the visitors who managed more shots on target.
Derby's collapse over the last few weeks really has been quite spectacular and the Rams have gone from title contenders to scrapping to even make the playoffs. According to the shot metrics this position is pretty much exactly where they should be, but the optics of a rather rapid PDO fall are no less jarring in real life.

Week 41 brings yet another top eight clash in Middlesbrough vs Watford. How much will Watford's 10-man exertions on Friday evening have exhausted the Hornets? Middlesbrough enjoyed a straightforward, if unspectacular, win over Wigan earlier that afternoon which could leave them much fresher.
With a tip of the hat to Brentford vs Nottingham Forest, that game at the Riverside Stadium is the one to watch in week 41.

Sadly though, this glut of all-top eight games in recent weeks means there will be precious few in the closing fixtures. And the Championship run-in will be all the poorer for it.

At the other end of the table, Blackpool's fate can be sealed this week. If the Seasiders fail to beat Reading on Tuesday night they will be officially relegated. Although it could all be academic at that point if Rotherham defeat Brighton on Monday afternoon. Millwall and Wigan are at least giving themselves some sort of chance, but its still a pretty substantial gap to make up.

Championship Week 16: Middlesbrough and Bournemouth battle for top; Leeds and Blackpool battle for respectability

Just a quick post before this weekend's games as its been a busy week and I have something else lined-up too.
I wrote about Bournemouth's rise up the table last time round, and I've been big on Middlesbrough since back in week six.
Well, now those two teams will meet on Saturday in what should be a cracking game.

Well, now those two teams will meet on Saturday in what should be a cracking game.
The teams are second (Middlesbrough) and fourth (Bournemouth) respectively in the overall shots share (Corsi/TSR) and first and second (again in that order) in shots on target share.
Both teams have been on a bit of a PDO binge recently too - largely caused by above average shooting %.

So if all that continues then we could have an absolute goal-fest up at the Riverside.
I usually try to watch Cardiff games if I can find them, but for once I think I'll leave the Bluebirds adventures alone (it'll likely be messy either way) and settle down for this top of the table meeting.

At the other end of the table that Leeds vs Blackpool game could be horrible.
I rather cursed Blackpool mid-game against Fulham by tweeting at 2-0 up that they still had time to screw it up.
At that exact time of sending, Blackpool captain Tony McMahon got himself sent off - so Seasiders fans, I apologise.
However, the tangerine army are actually, by fancystats reckoning at least, a (very slightly) better team than Leeds.

It just comes down to that horrible PDO.
While the save% is a little below average (66.67% compared to 69.44%) the real killer for Blackpool is a brutal shooting% of just 19.61%.
Now this can be explained by many things, maybe Blackpool's strikers really couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo, maybe they are taking very low quality shot, perhaps under pressure all the time or from a long way out, perhaps the team is struggling to create comparable opportunities for taking shots, or perhaps everything they're hitting is whizzing just wide or high.
It's tough to say which (maybe all) of these is having the greatest effect, but combine it with getting less than 40% of the shots on target in a typical game and you can see how the struggles mount.
For Leeds the only good thing IS the PDO score.

Sitting at 107.33 at the moment, it is the only reason the Yorkshire side have not been rooted to the bottom of the table, because given their shot share numbers, if their PDO had hung anywhere near 90 for long it would be a very ugly situation indeed.
So although Leeds may not realise it, they most certainly are in the middle of a relegation fight at the moment.

Championship Week 15: Bournemouth soar, Forest slide, Lee Clark's awfulness

So it's been a hectic few weeks in the Championship (and for me) with quite a few changes at the top end and just two notable ones at the bottom end.
Looking at the top we see Watford now top three points clear of Bournemouth, Middlesbrough and Wolves.
The biggest surprise there is obviously the south coast team, but as we'll see in a bit, the Cherries deserve the lofty perch.

Cherry picking stats

I've watched a few Bournemouth games of late and have to say that I've really enjoyed them - something relayed by their stats.
The Cherries are sixth in total shots taken and third in shots on target. Combine that with a very solid defensive record and their underlying stats are really good - fourth in total shot share (Corsi/TSR) and an even more impressive third in shots on target share with more than 60% on average.
And this has been a season-long trend - SoT share has never been below 56%, while since week three the overall shot share has remained above 50%.

Week 10 was their most recent low point of the season so far when they hit 15th place - by no coincidence this was when they had a PDO of just 92.86.
Since then that has regressed back up and now sits above average at 107.88. But even as and when Bournemouth's PDO drops back a little, it's still very easy to see Eddie Howe's side challenging for promotion.

Forest's autumn fall

Taking the reverse path to Bournemouth has been Nottingham Forest.
I mentioned a few weeks back that Forest's position atop the division looked rather fragile and so it is proving to be.
Forest are doing this PDO cold turkey in one long hard dose.
From being joint top at week 11 with a PDO of 122.26, Forest are now tenth, having picked up just one point in four games with a PDO of 108.31.
So there's still a little way to go potentially for Stuart Pearce's side.

More worryingly though, Forest's total shot share has barely hovered above 50% and the shots on target share has actually dipped to below 50% and now sits at just 48%.
Maintain those numbers and Forest's promotion hopes will likely be extinct.
I've not watched much of Forest this season, so it would be interesting to know if this hard patch has seen Pearce change his tactics and hence the drop in shot shares.
If not, then perhaps he needs to. Or perhaps it is something more simple such as coming across a tough part of the fixture list.

Lee Clark... just wow

Finally - Birmingham.
I'm frankly amazed Lee Clark lasted as long as he did - it's shocking how much time a last day last minute escape can buy you. It took, of course, a PDO dip to get him sacked, but a PDO boost saved him earlier this season too.
Yes, we are still dealing in small sample sizes, but last season's statistal poor showing (and near-relegation scare) should have been ample warning.
To put the full horror of Clark's team into persepective - Birmingham has not had a corsi/TSR score of more than 46% (46.4% to be exact) all season and the shots on target performance is even worse.
The high point here is 41.7% - a full TWO THIRDS of the season has been spent with a shots on target share of LESS than 40%.
It really is horrific.
Yes, it's very apparent that there are other (bigger) problems at Birmingham, but unless Gary Rowett can really improve things (or they get a massive PDO boost) then Blues will be getting relegated.

PS - Poor Blackpool (again).
Having the aforementioned Lee Clark thrust upon you may be too much for one fan base to take.

Blackpool started off the first seven games with reasonable (given their position) shot share and shots on target share numbers - c 48% and 44% respectively.
But since then it's been all downhill.

PPS - I really hope Brighton's god-awful PDO (luck, variance, however you wish to describe it) turns soon.
The underlying numbers are just too good to ignore or all be down to score effects.
The Seagulls are still up at around 60% of all shots and have just started to dip slightly with shots on target share, but still boast a heafty 56.4% share there.
Saturday night's game may have summed up their season so far - competing hard going toe-to-toe with an aggressive attacking team and then one stupid error giving up a penalty, and thus the losing goal.
Credit to Brighton's fans and ownership for sticking by Hyypia - I hope their loyalty is paid back by the footballing gods soon.
